Infant Jaundice

What are the Symptoms and Causes of Severe Jaundice?

Jaundice is caused by a naturally occurring substance called bilirubin and the condition is quite common. While up to 60% of newborn babies suffer from jaundice, most are diagnosed and treated effectively. A newborn with jaundice may show these symptoms:

  • yellowish skin and eyes
  • extreme lethargy
  • lack of appetite

For many children with the condition, these symptoms fade after a few days when their liver and other organs develop enough to rid the body of excessive bilirubin. Shortly after birth, most infants' internal organs can perform this function. However, if your newborn was not treated for severe jaundice or underlying medical conditions were not taken into consideration by a heath care provider, your child may have suffered an injury as the result of medical malpractice. Seizures, difficulty breathing, and permanent brain damage may result.
